Animal Service Unit

Mission Statement

The mission of the Prairie Grove Police Department Animal Services Unit is to balance the health, safety and welfare of the people and animals in our city. Our mission is accomplished by working with our citizens; by enforcing the domestic animal laws of our city and state, by providing educational programs and humanely providing care, nourishment and a safe environment for the unwanted, stray, abused and abandoned animals in our city. We will educate the public about responsible companion animal ownership, aggressively investigate animal cruelty cases, find homes for the homeless and as a last resort humanely euthanize the unwanted animals in our community.

About Us

On January 1, 2008, the Prairie Grove Office of Animal Control was transferred from the Public Works Department to the Prairie Grove Police Department. Overnight animal control in the City of Prairie Grove was transformed from a part time "dog catcher" to a professional 24 hour a day operation. The Animal Service Unit is supervised by the police sergeant who also serves as the "Chief Animal Services Officer". The Chief ASO is assisted in his duties by all sworn members of the police department. Officers routinely answer animal complaints and write citations for violation of city and state animal laws. Acts of animal cruelty and neglect are aggressively investigated and prosecuted. The Chief ASO is a state certified animal control officer and other members of the department are certified in chemical capture. All members of the department have received in house training on animal procedure ad care. The unit has a fully equipped animal services vehicle that is also equipped as an emergency police vehicle. We also maintain our own temporary animal holding facility.

Animal Adoption

All animals picked up by our Animal Services Unit are held in our facility for a period of ten days. After the ten day period, healthy and friendly animals are available for adoption for a $5.00 dollar donation fee. The new owner is responsible for all vaccinations, license requirements and is required to spay/neuter the animal.
